Role

Lead Designer

The challenge

The university sector is highly competitive across Victoria, particularly during Open Day season, making it increasingly important for institutions to find clear and distinctive points of difference.

I proposed the concept of the EcoHub, which brought Swinburne’s sustainability initiatives to the forefront for the first time at the university’s largest annual event, tapping into a topic that strongly resonates with prospective students and younger audiences.

My Role

I led the project from concept through to final delivery, contributing across video creative direction, branding, spatial design, campaign assets and stakeholder collaboration.

This included developing the visual identity, creating print and digital collateral, refining messaging hierarchy and ensuring a cohesive experience across the activation.

The Approach

I reached out directly to academics and alumni to discuss their sustainability-focused research and projects, curating a shortlist of initiatives to feature within the hub.

These included a hydrogen-powered drone, a wave machine, sustainable cups and straws, as well as a mind map-style breakdown of sustainability initiatives across Swinburne’s various study areas, demonstrating the university’s broader commitment to sustainability across research, curriculum and student-led innovation.

I then designed the hub as an immersive spatial gallery experience where prospective students could explore the projects and engage directly with academics throughout the day.

Outcome & Reflection

The final activation successfully transformed complex sustainability messaging into a more engaging and approachable campus experience.

The project demonstrated the value of combining strategic communication with strong visual storytelling to encourage participation and increase visibility around environmental initiatives.

EcoHub received positive feedback through the Swinburne Open Day survey, with sustainability and climate-related concerns frequently emerging as key areas of interest amongst prospective students and parents.
